A Safe Reopening of Schools Starts with an Equitable Foundation
Resources to provide school leaders with anti-racist SEL strategies centered on relationships to support students and adults as they return to school this fall.
By The BELE Network
In the midst of a global pandemic that has caused school closures, economic crisis, and exasperated racial inequities, BELE Partner, Collaborative For Academic, Social, And Emotional Learning (CASEL) is committed to helping schools foster equitable learning environments. Whether in classrooms or through distance learning, the safety of students should be prioritized and location shouldn’t hinder quality education from being readily accessible. Education is key to building an equitable society, and schools should be a place where every student feels a sense of belonging, is encouraged to harness their social and emotional competencies, and given the support to grow and thrive as anti-racist members of the community.
CASEL has launched, Reunite, Renew, and Thrive: SEL Roadmap for Reopening School, a roadmap that includes equity-focused SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) strategies and provides school leaders with whole-school, anti-racist SEL strategies centered on building relationships designed to support students and adults as they return to school this fall. The roadmap was created with the input of a broad range of stakeholders through focus groups and one-on-one interviews that included state members, Collaborating States Initiative, districts in the Collaborating Districts Initiative, valued collaborators, and national experts. SEL offers a critical foundation for supporting students and adults in the midst of great uncertainty and a long-term path for sustaining thriving communities. Check out the full roadmap here and be inspired to transform school systems to ensure all students feel like they belong and are empowered to reach their fullest potential in school.
